ADAS Calibration: Ensuring Safe and Effective Vehicle Assistance Systems

ADAS calibration refers to the process of accurately aligning a vehicle’s cameras and sensors to ensure the proper functioning of its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. It serves as an umbrella term encompassing the necessary steps taken to optimize the performance of these systems.

Failure to calibrate ADAS can pose significant risks to both the vehicle occupants and other road users. On the other hand, a vehicle that has been correctly calibrated can make all the difference between a safe and uneventful journey and a potential accident.

Each ADAS system relies on data provided by cameras, radars, and other sensors. As a result, individual calibration is required for each system, ideally performed at least every three years.

However, specific events may necessitate calibration immediately following repairs or adjustments, such as:

  • Wheel alignment or axle geometry adjustment
  • Replacement of shock absorbers or coil springs
  • Track control arm adjustment or replacement
  • Steering rack adjustment or replacement
  • Windscreen replacement
  • Front or rear collision repair
  • Bodywork repairs, including even minor tasks like bumper removal

By ensuring the regular and timely calibration of ADAS, drivers can maximize the safety and effectiveness of their vehicle’s assistance systems, minimizing the potential for accidents and promoting a smoother driving experience.

Why does it need calibrating?

ADAS systems rely on a combination of cameras and radars to work as intended. Following wheel alignment, a windscreen replacement or any kind of collision, either a major accident or even a minor kerb bump, the camera or radar device can become misaligned and this could have a significant impact on the functionality of an ADAS feature, which could be the difference between avoiding an accident or not.

IN ORDER TO ENSURE A VEHICLE’S ADAS TECHNOLOGY IS WORKING CORRECTLY, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND GETTING AN ADAS CALIBRATION AFTER ANY OF THE FOLLOWING EVENTS

Accident Damage (especially to the front or rear end of the vehicle)

Radar/Camera replacement

Suspension component replacement such as coil springs, suspension arms and any steering component replacement

Windscreen replacement
